I am not an inventor. I am a dreamer. I weave the fabric of my dreams from my experiences and encounters; I allow my flights of fancies to take me wherever the boundaries of those dreams extend – hence I take to the skies defined solely through an esoteric passion born out of necessity.
Dai Vernon’s Triumph from Stars of Magic is a classic in the genre of card magic; there are so many versions of Triumph out there and I have always maintained that the best version is still the original, where every move is motivated and accounted for in a logical and concise manner.
Years later, I heard that a magician by the name of Jerry Sadowitz had a version of Triumph where a spectator simply names a card and the card is miraculously face up in the deck, after the usual face-up and face-down shuffles. I was much intrigued by the idea, but having never had a chance to witness Mr Sadowitz actually perform it, I had no idea what kind of handling was involved in his version. But from the rave reviews, I was sure that it was something bordering on the miraculous, no doubt Mr Sadowitz was indeed a legend in his own right. Suffice to say, I’ve heard many good things about his work.
The only thing I had to go on was what I have heard, so I devised a version which was – in my opinion – a little bit of an overkill. Utilising lots of riffle shuffle techniques, I had a version where the spectator named a card and number and after the shuffles, it would appear face up at that number and every other card would be face down. I only performed it a few times – though the reactions were strong, so much work went into a single effect, perhaps the effort required was hardly justified. This is, of course, a subject that is debateable, but I didn’t want to turn it into a technical fest; it was ‘only’ a card ‘trick’. Ha. Ha.
Eventually, it occurred to me to simplify things and the final version is the one you see here. I have tried very hard to reduce as much handling as possible to make it as consistent as possible without too many overt moves carried out at critical intervals. I hope you enjoy performing it as much as I have enjoyed hammering it together for you.
This has been a labour of love over a period of years and I do want to thank Mr Sadowitz for providing me with the inspiration to even embark on this undertaking to begin with.
