A workshop for the serious card workers.

This workshop is a staight up teach-in session that focuses on getting attendees to learn how things work and assumes that the attendees are familiar with construction of their presentations. Even though the workshop is aimed at intermediate to advanced card workers, the scope of the material is wide and varied, ranging from the relatively easy to the knuckle busting. Attendees will definitely find something that they can use regardless of their skill level.

Check out some of the videos:
http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=4293DC36A853139C

Just some of the effects you will learn at this workshop:

SCALE:
[*] - simple: anyone can do it; it's mostly presentation and basic sleights
[**] - intermediate: a degree of card knowledge required but doable with some practice
[***] - advanced: a good degree of card handling and knowledge required
[****] - insane: be prepared to put in a lot of work

  1. Any Card... [**]
This is the infamous "Any card triumph" where a spectator can name any card and the card ends up face up in the deck after a series of face-up/face-down shuffles.
  2. Topsy Turvy Selections [***]
4 selections are lost into the deck. The deck is truly messed up in a series of face-up and face-down shuffles. They selections are then located in increasingly more challenging scenarios, ending with the entire deck miraculously straightening up.
  3. JIC Sandwich [**]
A very fun repeat sandwich effect that would get you interacting with your spectators!
  4. Karmatic [***]
2 selections are lost in the deck. After a serious of shuffles to thoroughly mix the cards, the magician cuts the deck into 2 piles. The spectators deal a card at a time onto the table in unison. They arrive at the selections at the same time!
  5. Lyon's Lair [*] (alternative, much simpler handling)
    A simpler version of Karmatic
  6. ET Deck [*]
A very easy tossed out deck routine using an ordinary/borrowed deck.
  7. Incomplete location [**]
A card is selected and lost extremely fairly; yet the magician is able to locate it in record time.
  8. Red Sea Parting [**]
One of the cleanest and strongest versions of 'out of this world'.
  9. The A.R.P. [**]
A selected card is found reversed in the deck after it has been returned - in the spectator's hand.
  10. The Incredible Centre [****]
Your spectators won't believe this one.
  11. Master Mechanic [****]
Demonstrates the ultimate false deal - 4 cards from the centre of the deck and 4 from different locations in the deck. This is one routine that will establish your reputation.
  12. The Remembrance [****] (Performance Only - if time permits)
A mind-busting routine that demonstrates the magician's uncanny memory. Another reputation maker.

    The Memory Deck [***]
A simpler version of The Remembrance.

Some of the moves/sleights/subtleties/concepts that will be covered during the course of the effects:

  • Shade's modified Master Grip
  • True/False moves (80/20 rule)
  • Zarrow shuffle tips and the Shade Variant
  • Creating moments in time - setting the off-beat for misdirection
  • False dealing tips
  • Getting in and getting out of moves
  • Palming - getting into a palm and replacement
  • Curry Turn Over switch
  • Shade's Primp & control
  • Double lift subtleties and convincers
  • Shading the shift in motion
  • Shade's modified Gambler's Cop (2 variants - off the bottom and from the top)
  • Incomplete Faro applications
  • Card placement using stacks and shuffles
  • Tabled faro (variants from easy to advanced methods) and tips

The Subway Session PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 19 February 2010 21:30

VENUE: Ulu Pandan CC, #05-05
TIME: 1800
COST: $25 (Includes refreshments)

Two of the effects taught are showcased in the following short video performance celebrating Joshua's birthday. (First two)

Items included in the session:

Broad Programme:

1800 hrs - Arrival at Ulu Pandan CC and refreshments/mingling

1830 hrs - Start of Performance segment of workshop

1900 hrs - Start of Explanation & Hands-on segment of workshop

2015 hrs - Break (refreshments are what's left from start of workshop)

2030 hrs - Continuation of workshop

2115 hrs - End of workshop and packing up

2130 hrs - Good night and see you again

*Note: Please bring along your own decks as you will need them for the workshop. Payment will be made at the door, so please bring cash and we greatly appreciate if you can give the exact change.

The structure of the workshop will be very similar to the previous one. The focus is to teach the bottom deal and hence the effects selected are meant to demonstrate the versatile power of the deal, so don't expect too much in terms of effects - they are there to help you have a good time practising it.

What will be covered are:

1) Subways - the push off bottom deal: this version - as far as I can tell - is fresh (always like subway sandwiches) and is not in print or media. It is an adaptation of the gambler's bottom deal that I favour. It has all the advantages of that deal and you'll agree once you know it that it has virtually no real weakness (except for the need to practice).

2) 4-5 effects (depending on time) - each showcasing an aspect of the bottom deal in a different light. Each strong enough to stand on its own as an effect you'd want to use over and over.

3) Practice tips - how to practice/when to practice.

4) Tells - There are various tells that give away the bottom deal: I'll try to cover as many as I can and some simple methods to control them, from finger flash to noise control.

5) Some shuffle controls you can use with the bottom deal

6) Shifts / palms that you will find useful with the bottom deal

*Notes for the session will be provided. It's a lot to cover in a 3-hour slot.

11 September 2009
VENUE: Singapore Press Holdings Auditorium
TIME: 1030 - 1600

The workshop at Singapore Press Holdings was a huge success. Many thanks go out to the people who made this such an event to remember for the participants - most of them students from the various secondary schools in Singapore. There were a few parents in the crowd as well and they were equally enthralled!

Enrico Varella gave a fantastic presentation and opened the workshop with a bang! He presented a brief history of magic and shared many of his personal life anecdotes with the eager participants. His performance of the Professor's Nightmare was masterful, as was his 'Hanging Coins'.

Bob Chua adopted a more informal approach and entertained questions from the audience about his life as a professional magician. He also gave an impressive performance as he wowed the crowd with his sleight of hand skills during the break.

The student leaders (from St Joseph's Institution, Raffles Junior College and Xin Min Secondary school) chosen to run the workshop each performed a couple of effects on stage - all of them were nothing shy of Aces. It was truly humbling for me: it was almost a fleeting glimpse into the future as I watched the next generation of up and coming magicians at their best. Some of them made mistakes owing to the tremendous pressure and stress (for most, it was the first time that they had to perform under such conditions), but their quick thinking allowed them to extricate themselves out of the unexpected trouble. All carried themselves very well - with dignity and respect for the art and their audience.

Many thanks to SPH for giving us a chance to be a part of this amazing event - I hope we have in our own minor way contributed to the future of magic in this little corner of the world.
